Calvin Freiburger was a student at Fond du Lac High School in March 2005 when he made national news by taking a defiant stance against school officials who forbid him from saying "God Bless America" over the public address system.

It was the phrase he used to end an announcement about a drive to collect DVDs to send to troops overseas. It wasn't until the Freiburger contacted a law firm that he was allowed go back on the school's intercom and use the phrase again.

"I wasn't really afraid to take a stand. At the time, I guess I was annoyed that there was this misunderstanding. The self-consciousness didn't kick until the media started contacting me," he said.

For years, he said, he has looked at the world around him and felt the need to become involved in what he calls "some of its problems." This past November, he led his own crusade to educate people on his stand supporting an amendment to the Constitution that would define marriage and ban same-sex unions.

"I don't think we are put on this earth to never stick our necks out for something. Defiance, to me, means not doing it for the sake of being defiant. But if you have something you know is right, it has to be your overriding concern," he said.

He recites one of his favorite quotes by Winston Churchill: "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."

I hope this comes up every year so people will know what the kids are exposed to in Fondy High School. I didn't post the rest of the Reporter story because I don't want to give the others anymore press.

Last week, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Stephen Biskupic, delivered the federal grand jury indictment of Kenosha millionaire Dennis Troha. In doing so, Biskupic shook the pillars of political power from Madison to New York.

The eight-page indictment details two primary charges against Troha. The first charge is that Troha illegally funneled hundreds of thousands dollars to Gov. Doyle’s two campaigns for governor. The second charge is that Troha lied to the FBI about it. More...

Guest Commentary: 'True Republicans' recognize need for unity on Iraq policy

These words are as true today as they were nearly 200 years ago.

We are in a struggle. We have endured falls. We are not only at war, but we are in a fight for our lives and for the very existence of this country that we so dearly love.

It is easy to forget this reality as we tend to our daily business. It's easy to separate ourselves over time from the terrorist attacks five years ago that catapulted our nation into this war. It's easy to say, "Stop the war, bring home the troops, and give peace a chance," yet have no other credible plan.

However, no one ever said this was going to be easy. No one ever promised that the terrorists would lie down and surrender their weapons and their ideologies and their hatred. In fact, President Bush warned from the very beginning that this would be a long battle and that it would require much sacrifice, not only from the American military, but from the American people.

Only two weeks ago, the U.S. House of Representatives, with the support of 17 wayward "Republicans," decided to take the easy way out through passage of a resolution condemning President Bush's plan for a troop surge.

Their very public vote now deserves a very public response. In supporting this resolution, these "Republicans" gave our troops and our president a vote of no confidence. They gave not only hope, but validation to the enemy — the terrorists that would rejoice to see you and me dead in the streets.

These "Republicans" told the enemy that if they only resist long enough, America will give up and turn its back on our friends. These "Republicans" sent a message across the globe that not even the Bush Administration's own party is willing to stand up for what is right.

But worst of all, these 17 Republicans turned their backs on the people who elected them — the same people who re-elected President Bush because of his tough action against terror and for his ability to lead during times of crisis.

Why is it so difficult for these Republicans to see how much their actions affect the morale of our soldiers and their families? Why are they so blinded by stature and chairmanships and re-election campaigns? Why do we stand by while they continue to prove how out of touch they are with our American way of life?

True Republicans support "peace through strength," which does not mean looking for a fight, but most surely doesn't mean backing down from one. True Republicans have a fundamental passion for freedom and for protecting that freedom, whatever the cost.

True Republicans work to secure our country today so that the children of tomorrow may have peace. True Republicans never turn their backs on the brave troops who daily risk their lives to ensure that we are able to enjoy all the blessings of this great land.

So, shame on those 17 Republicans for being out of touch with our American reality; shame on them for not recognizing the country's need for unity rather than politics; shame on them for turning their backs on American troops; shame on them for giving hope to the enemy; and, what a shame it is that in this very Republican Sixth District, our own Congressman Tom Petri was one of those 17.

DISSING THE TROOPS: UPDATE Our news department has the update:An Internet company based in West Allis is confirming that it sent an inflammatory email to a US soldier.

The email has been making its rounds on the blogs. It was first reported on the website snopes.com.Sergeant Jason Hess, who's currently stationed in Iraq, had emailed discount-mats.com.

The company lists its contact information as an address in West Allis. Sergeant Hess inquired as to whether the company could send mats to an APO address, basically asking if the company can ship to soldiers in Iraq.

The company emailed him back. That email, which Sergeant Hess shared with Newsradio 620 WTMJ, said: "we do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq.

If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq."A military spokesman says it's not unusual that a company won't ship to an APO address.A Vice President with Bargain Suppliers, the website's parent company, confirms the email was sent.

He says the employee who sent it is being held accountable and will be dealt with.In addition, the spokesperson says the address and phone number that are now being circulated around the world are someone's home in West Allis.

He says they've been bombarded with phone calls and as you can imagine they're getting plenty of complaints.

KWANZAA: HOLIDAY FROM THE FBI
December 27, 2006

(NOTE: This is an updated version of a column by Ann Coulter that first ran six years ago in December.)

President Bush's Kwanzaa message this year skipped the patently absurd claim of years past that: "African-Americans and people around the world reflect on African heritage during Kwanzaa." Instead, he simply said: "I send greetings to those observing Kwanzaa."

More African-Americans spent this season reflecting on the birth of Christ than some phony non-Christian holiday invented a few decades ago by an FBI stooge. Kwanzaa is a holiday for white liberals, not blacks. It is a fact that Kwanzaa was invented in 1966 by a black radical FBI pawn, Ron Karenga, aka Dr. Maulana Karenga. Karenga was a founder of United Slaves, a violent nationalist rival to the Black Panthers and a dupe of the FBI. In what was probably a foolish gamble, during the madness of the '60s the FBI encouraged the most extreme black nationalist organizations in order to discredit and split the left. The more preposterous the organization, the better. Karenga's United Slaves was perfect.

In the annals of the American '60s, Karenga was the Father Gapon, stooge of the czarist police. Despite modern perceptions that blend all the black activists of the '60s, the Black Panthers did not hate whites. They did not seek armed revolution. Those were the precepts of Karenga's United Slaves. United Slaves were proto-fascists, walking around in dashikis, gunning down Black Panthers and adopting invented "African" names. (That was a big help to the black community: How many boys named "Jamal" currently sit on death row?)

Whether Karenga was a willing dupe, or just a dupe, remains unclear. Curiously, in a 1995 interview with Ethnic NewsWatch, Karenga matter-of-factly explained that the forces out to get O.J. Simpson for the "framed" murder of two whites included "the FBI, the CIA, the State Department, Interpol, the Chicago Police Department" and so on. Karenga should know about FBI infiltration. (He further noted that the evidence against O.J. "was not strong enough to prohibit or eliminate unreasonable doubt" — an interesting standard of proof.) In the category of the-gentleman-doth-protest-too-much, back in the '70s, Karenga was quick to criticize rumors that black radicals were government-supported.

When Nigerian newspapers claimed that some American black radicals were CIA operatives, Karenga publicly denounced the idea, saying, "Africans must stop generalizing about the loyalties and motives of Afro-Americans, including the widespread suspicion of black Americans being CIA agents." Now we know that the FBI fueled the bloody rivalry between the Panthers and United Slaves. In one barbarous outburst, Karenga's United Slaves shot to death Black Panthers Al "Bunchy" Carter and Deputy Minister John Huggins on the UCLA campus.

Karenga himself served time, a useful stepping-stone for his current position as a black studies professor at California State University at Long Beach. Kwanzaa itself is a lunatic blend of schmaltzy '60s rhetoric, black racism and Marxism. Indeed, the seven "principles" of Kwanzaa praise collectivism in every possible arena of life — economics, work, personality, even litter removal. ("Kuumba: Everyone should strive to improve the community and make it more beautiful.") It takes a village to raise a police snitch. When Karenga was asked to distinguish Kawaida, the philosophy underlying Kwanzaa, from "classical Marxism," he essentially explained that under Kawaida, we also hate whites.

While taking the "best of early Chinese and Cuban socialism" — which one assumes would exclude the forced abortions, imprisonment for homosexuals and forced labor — Kawaida practitioners believe one's racial identity "determines life conditions, life chances and self-understanding." There's an inclusive philosophy for you. (Sing to "Jingle Bells") Kwanzaa bells, dashikis sell Whitey has to pay; Burning, shooting, oh what fun On this made-up holiday!

Coincidentally, the seven principles of Kwanzaa are the very same seven principles of the Symbionese Liberation Army, another charming invention of the Least-Great Generation. In 1974, Patricia Hearst, kidnap victim-cum-SLA revolutionary, posed next to the banner of her alleged captors, a seven-headed cobra. Each snake head stood for one of the SLA's revolutionary principles: Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba and Imani — the same seven "principles" of Kwanzaa. With his Kwanzaa greetings, President Bush is saluting the intellectual sibling of the Symbionese Liberation Army, killer of housewives and police. He is saluting the founder of United Slaves, who were such lunatics that they shot Panthers for not being sufficiently insane — all with the FBI as their covert ally.

It's as if David Duke invented a holiday called "Anglika," and the president of the United States issued a presidential proclamation honoring the synthetic holiday. People might well take notice if that happened. Kwanzaa was the result of a '60s psychosis grafted onto the black community. Liberals have become so mesmerized by multicultural nonsense that they have forgotten the real history of Kwanzaa and Karenga's United Slaves — the violence, the Marxism, the insanity. Most absurdly, for leftists anyway, is that they have forgotten the FBI's tacit encouragement of this murderous black nationalist cult founded by the father of Kwanzaa. Now the "holiday" concocted by an FBI dupe is honored in a presidential proclamation and public schools across the nation.

The only principle Kwanzaa promotes is liberals' unbounded capacity to respect any faith but Christianity. A movement that started approximately 2,000 years before Kwanzaa leaps well beyond collectivism and litter removal to proclaim that we are all equal before God. "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28).

It was practitioners of that faith who were at the forefront of the abolitionist and civil rights movements. But that's all been washed down the memory hole, along with the true origins of Kwanzaa.

The Case of Term Limits November 15, 2006

As I mentioned in a previous post, I think a lot of the problems Republicans had at the polls last Tuesday was due to the fact they simply stayed too long at the party, became as seduced and corrupted by power as the Democrats they replaced, and lost their vision of boldness and change.

A big part of that could have been avoided, I believe, if Republicans had simply kept their commitment to term limits.In 1994, Republicans came to power in Washington for the first time in forty years on the strength of their Contract For America, a brilliant plan devised largely by Newt Gingrich—who would become Speaker with the new majority—that took aim at the public’s disgust with politics as usual under Democrat rule.

A key component of that Contract was a call for term limits, with the belief that the people were better served by a government comprised of citizen legislators rather than career politicians.

Many of that vaunted class of ’94 even self-imposed term limits on themselves, and it was that group of mavericks that did everything within their power to hold true to the Contract for America, though unfortunately they were undermined by their party leadership who decided that once they had taken power, they were far more interested in keeping it than fulfilling the promises they made to the American people.

One member of that Class of ’94 was Rep. Tom Coburn from Oklahoma, who probably did more to infuriate Republican leadership in the 90’s than anyone except President Clinton.

Dr. Coburn helped lead an attempted coup of Speaker Gingrich in 1997, mounted a de facto filibuster during the 1999 Appropriations Bills to force attention to the fact that Republicans were sabotaging the 1997 balanced budget law, and was routinely ridiculed and condemned by his own leadership as a member of the ‘perfectionist caucus.’

What gave Coburn the courage to take such stands? His 2003 book Breach of Trust recounts how many media sources speculated on that.Roll Call wrote, “Of course, it’s easy for Coburn to rebel.

His six-year, self-imposed term limit ends in 2000, so there are no threats leadership can make to dissuade him.” Mark Shields on “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer” said, “Tom Coburn took the term limits pledge when he got elected, and he’s leaving. What are you going to do? Are you going to threaten him? Are you going to tell him he’s not going to have a good office next time?

He’s not going to be here next time!” The Washington Post wrote, “Coburn has little to fear in challenging the leaders because he came to Congress promising to stay no more than three terms, and his time is almost up.” And columnist Debra Saunders opined, “Term limits set him free. Having kept his word on term limits, Coburn also is more inclined than House careerists to make Congress keep its word.”

Remember earlier this year when Milwaukee County District Attorney E. Michael McCann took the rare step of criticizing his own party’s leader in Gov. Jim Doyle on campaign finance, and then lent his voice to the school choice movement in Milwaukee, again contrary to the wishes of his party.

I have no doubt those opinions were genuine, but do you believe he would have taken those stands if not for the freedom that came with knowing he was not running for office again?

Knowing your time is limited provides the ammunition to take more risks, to actually focus on solving problems instead of simply creating issues for the next campaign, and to spend more time worrying about the next generation than about the next election.

In his book, Dr. Coburn also recounts the story of the Roman emperor Cincinnatus, who was a retired general in 458 B.C., when the Roman Empire was threatened by the Aequians and the senate offered him the power of dictator, believing he was their only chance to save the Empire.

Cincinnatus was reportedly tending to the fields of his small, three-acre farm at the time, but agreed to accept the role. It took him 16 days to defeat the enemy at Rome’s gate, at which time he relinquished the role of dictator and returned to his farm.

As Coburn states, “The ease with which Cincinnatus gave up his awesome powers made him a legend. His story resonates today because the American people are longing for leaders who are not enamored with power and position but are free to govern according to their conscience.”

Coburn is right: The American people are longing for leaders. Where are they?

How our Grand Old Party can retake the initiative

Since the election disaster on November 7, now is the time for the Republican Party to get back to basics.

Not knowing -- or even caring -- about the greatness of our Party is what placed us on the defensive against the Democrats and allowed them to outmaneuver us so easily.

The way to wrest the political initiative away from the Democrats is to draw upon the strength and clarity to be found in our Grand Old Party’s (forgotten) heritage of civil rights achievement. Our heritage is the moral high ground, and giving that up cost us the political initiative. Republican office-holders, candidates and activists would benefit tremendously from integrating this truth into political campaigns.

To illustrate, one of the founders of the Republican Party, Senator Zachariah Chandler (R-MI), had been a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape northward. The first Republican to serve as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Salmon Chase, had earlier won renown for defending runaway slaves. Another of our founders, Senator Lyman Trumbull (R-IL), wrote the 13th Amendment as well as the 1866 Civil Rights Act.

Today, for example, is the anniversary of the day back in 1872 when Susan B. Anthony was arrested for having cast a ballot. Afterward, she boasted to Elizabeth Cady Stanton that she had voted for "the Republican ticket... straight!"
To bring back to our Party that zeal and dedication is why I speak at Republican events around the country.

Commentary: Thanks, Wisconsin, for voting 'yes' for marriage amendment

On Nov. 7, Wisconsin voted "yes" for marriage. Predictably, bitter liberals are already spewing venom.

A recent letter declared that discriminatory fascists were "who (we) are as a people." The writer revealed his own closed-mindedness by declaring that "yes" voters had "no good logical argument."

The amendment doesn't "discriminate against someone because (we) don't like who they are."

Despite Fair Wisconsin's claims (a group better suited to the title "Fraud Wisconsin" for the dishonest campaign that sunk Wisconsin politics to a new low with last-minute, deliberately confusing autocalls,) it won't destroy visitation rights or domestic violence protections for unmarried couples. Nor is it an effort in "keeping people from loving each other," as another letter absurdly claimed.

Gays can still live together, and in a liberal church, they can even "get married" in the eyes of their congregation, if not the law.

Every single Wisconsinite is still treated equally. Rights lie with individuals, not relationships. Everyone has the individual right to enter the institution of marriage with someone of the opposite sex. Gays don't like that choice, which may be an argument for same-sex marriage, but not for the idea that gays are second-class citizens.

This idea that equality demands same-sex marriage is based on a misunderstanding of marriage. Its purpose is not to say any one couple's love is more "real" than another. Our increasingly secular, gratification-centric society may have forgotten, but marriage has meaning and purpose. The meaning is the union of a man and a woman. The purpose? Canadian scholar Margaret Somerville said: "Through marriage our society marks out the relationship of two people who will together transmit human life to the next generation and nurture and protect that life."

Children need influence of a mother and father to grow into mature, well-rounded adults. Studies and common sense tell us that motherless and fatherless homes are detrimental to a child.

Please listen: I don't doubt the love or sincerity of many gays. The vast majority of conservatives understand that many really want to give children a loving home (despite what demagogues might tell you, monsters like Fred Phelps enjoy no support from the political or religious Right). But parenting is about the ingredients, not the numbers.

We speak of the sanctity of marriage because it is sacred; it has a role in our society that every American ought to revere, a role that deserves unique societal recognition. Simply put, marriage is the nucleus of the family, which is the foundation of civilization itself.

True, modern marriages often fail to honor this lofty description. Divorce, casualized sex and encouraged youth experimentation result in broken homes, broken hearts, and far too many children growing up without the love and guidance they need.

Yes, by and large, we have failed to protect marriage. But the claim, advanced in another letter to The Reporter, that social conservatives "do not seem to mind" things like divorce and sham celebrity marriages, is a lie.

For instance, just go to the Heritage Foundation (www.heritage.org)or the Family Research Council (www.frc.org) and you'll see that we examine these issues a great deal. Furthermore, distorting it to encompass homosexual unions would be a further failure to defend it. If we are ever to pull this sacred institution out of the hole we left it in, we have to put our foot down now to the gay marriage lobby's attempts to sink it deeper.

Hire him as a paid political consultant to her campaign. Wonder what he's being paid to do? Use your own imagination.

A Republican would never get away with this. Spivak and Bice, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, report:Not only does the Milwaukee Democrat have her sister Brenda on the campaign payroll to the tune of nearly $40,000 annually, as we reported last year, but Moore now has brought on her 27-year-old son, Sowande Omokunde, also known as Supreme Solar Allah.

Recent campaign reports show Moore, who was easily re-elected to a second term, paid her son $1,500 in October for political consulting. Omokunde told others that he was the campaign's deputy field director.Neither the congresswoman nor her sister returned calls Friday.

As you may recall, Omokunde was one of four Democratic staffers who pleaded guilty to misdemeanors for slashing tires on 25 vans hours before Republican Party officials were to use them to drive voters to the polls on election day 2004.

In April, Omokunde was sentenced to four months in jail and fined $1,000 for his role in the much-publicized caper.

The national media made a big deal when Tom DeLay was accused of doing this for his wife and daughter, although in far greater dollar amounts. But they weren't convicted of election-day vandalism in the very district where their husband/father was on the ballot.

Will the national media pick up this?

Tax Money for the Arts in Fond du Lac

The City Council is being asked now to fund the Arts in Fond du Lac with our tax dollars by adding $20,000 to the budget for support of the arts. This would be an outrageous use of our tax dollars that could be put to better use. If this is so important to the downtown business why don’t they fund it? Why should all the citizens of Fond du Lac spend their tax dollars to support what some of us think is useless. Where are the donors? Where is the support? Why don’t the wealthy of Fond du Lac fund this? Because they like I do not think this is that important.

It is easy for someone to say it brings business to the downtown but where is the proof? Just because someone says something doesn’t mean it is true. Where is the proof?

If we have $20,000 to throw around why don’t we repair the curb and gutter on South Butler Street? That street has not had curb and gutter in over 25 years. If you don’t believe me go for a ride and see for yourself. Yet these homes are taxed as if they have these improvements.

I was in Madison on business a couple of years ago and one of the public buildings has an art display. Several of the pieces were of a naked man around 60 years. This was full frontal nudity for all to see even children. This is what some consider art. Do you? I’ll bet some on the art council do. Will this happen in Fond du Lac with our tax dollars. If council members pass this I will hold those who vote for this responsible.

Also when will we start seeing a cross in urine called art in Fond du Lac? And please don’t say that could not happen in Fond du Lac because it can. I refuse to allow our tax dollars be wasted on such unimportant agendas. If it is that important to this group let them find private funding. Fixing the roads with our tax dollars is the correct use of our tax dollars. Fix the roads! Read this story in The Reporter...

Governor Jim Doyle has failed the Latino community. Our Latino youth are increasingly failing to graduate from high school. Those that do graduate are finding that Jim Doyle and his Board of Regents have priced Latinos out of a college education. An April 2006 report by the Manhattan Institute shows that Wisconsin had the worst graduation rate gap between Latinos and whites (54 percent vs. 92 percent).

Over the last four years, incumbent Governor Jim Doyle has increased tuition for Wisconsin’s Latino students and their families by more than 50 percent.

The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education (Measuring Up, 2002, 2004 and 2006) gives Wisconsin an ‘F’ in college affordability. The National Center reports show that during Jim Doyle’s term, the percentage of income needed to pay for college expenses has increased on average from 18 percent in 2002 to 26 percent in 2006. The percentage of income needed to pay for college for families in Wisconsin making under $32,000 now stands at 29 percent, whereas college
expenses consume 59 percent of income of families making less than $15,000 a year.

Higher paying skill trades also elude Latinos. A January 2006 Report Card on Minority Participation in Construction Trade Apprentices in the Milwaukee Area shows that area companies are preparing 14 whites apprentices for every 1 Latino apprentice entering the skilled trades.

Latinos employed in Jim Doyle’s administration do not fare well. In terms of a June 2005 average annual salary for all permanent classified state employees, even Jim Doyle’s own administration ranks Latinos near the bottom-18th place out of 24.

Latinas in Jim Doyle’s administration occupy the very bottom of the average annual salary-24th place out of 24. Governor Jim Doyle’s record on issues important to the Latino community is dismal. If Latinos do not do well in Jim Doyle’s own administration, can we expect any better throughout the state? Does Jim Doyle have any respect for the Latino community? Are Latinos truly welcome? Is takes more than a campaign ad in Spanish to address the needs of Latino families.

It takes commitment. Mark Green’s commitment to education and jobs holds the promise of opportunities for Latinos and for creating an educated and skilled workforce to move Wisconsin forward.

Letters: Gay marriage; Disabilities; County Board size

Every letter today was good so I posted all of them.

What happened in Massachusetts
I am writing in defense of the lady who was laughed at in a letter for her statement on what will happen in our schools if the gay marriage ban referendum fails.

Her statements were not comical, idiotic or preposterous, nor were they predictions. They were frightening, provable facts.

Thanks to the nationwide activist group GLSEN, Gay/Lesbian and Straight Education Network, here are examples of what's already taken place in Massachusetts alone.

Brookline High School —During Gay and Lesbian Awareness month, students were asked to wear pink cardboard triangles with the word "ally" and invited to "tell someone of your homosexual fantasies or experiences."

Ashland, Mass. —Middle School students were assigned gay roles for a play on discrimination. Two boys had to pretend to be homosexuals wanting to adopt a child. One had to say, "It's natural to be attracted to the same sex." Two girls had to act out the roles of lesbian partners. Parents only found out after it took place.

Silverlake High School, Kingston, Mass. — A ninth- grade textbook contained statements like "Testing your ability to function sexually and giving pleasure to another person may be less frightening in the early teens with people of your own sex." And "You may come to the conclusion that growing up means rejecting the values of your parents."

Framingham, Mass. — A high school survey asks; "How and when did you decide that you were a heterosexual? Is it possible that heterosexuality is a phase you will grow out of?" "Are you a heterosexual because you fear the same sex?" "If you've never slept with anyone of the same sex, how do you know you wouldn't prefer it?" "Is it possible you need a good same-sex experience?"

Don't use disability as campaign issue
People who are undecided or want to vote Democrat on Nov. 7 should read the Oct. 26 column by Linda Chavez in The Reporter. If that doesn't unplug their nose, this will.

Two years ago John Kerry and John Edwards paraded Christopher Reeves on the television screen to try to win election to the White House. Now Jim Doyle is trying to stay in Madison by parading Michael J. Fox on television.

Let me give some advice. If you have never been confined to a wheelchair or had cerebral palsy or have never had a mental disability, do not go giving people fake hope. You have no idea what is going on in the brain of a disabled person. Doctors and family members know a lot more than you do.

If you want to win an election, do it some other way. The only thing you deserve by parading mentally and physically disabled people on a television screen is to lose.

Supervisors should be 'downsized,' too
Here's my opinion on the referendum. I know that the whole Rolling Meadows is a dead issue, but I want to use it as an example.

I was one of the employees. In May, when I found out that the county executive was thinking of closing it, I decided to look elsewhere. At that time, there was absolutely nothing for a nursing assistant anywhere in Fond du Lac.

I had six years there and loved every minute of it. Other people had over 20 years there. A lot of them retired, a lot of them eventually found other jobs. The ones that were hired at the new Rolling Meadows, I'm glad you are there for our residents.

Now my question is to the County Board members who are against the downsizing: How does it feel to wonder if you will have a job or not? Not only was a home taken away from the residents who came to love Rolling Meadows, but jobs were taken too. I'm for the downsizing. I want you to know how all of us felt.

'Yes' vote will protect marriage
Why should we vote "yes" to ban "gay marriage"? Because the homosexual movement is spending millions worldwide to promote the "homosexual agenda."

Getting activist judges to legitimize gay marriage is a key step. Lawmakers are needed to tighten the definition of traditional marriage.

Your "yes" vote will protect traditional marriage, families, religion and society. Twenty states have already done so. I can't, in 300 words, explain how profoundly important is this issue. You could get the facts in the well-researched book, "The Homosexual Agenda" by Alan Sears and Craig Osten.

They say "that once same-sex marriage is affirmed, then other forms of 'marriage' will quickly be affirmed as well, such as polygamy, … bestiality and child marriage. In fact, the policy guide of the ACLU calls for the legalization of polygamy …" Elites point to Europe for "progressive ideas." The book reveals that "… in Europe a generation of children is growing up with no idea of what a traditional family is like."

Christians and Jews know full well what God commanded about homosexual activity – check Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1:24-27. Churches today, in trying to minister to the small (4 to 6 percent) of the population who are gay, have capitulated to subtle steps that will ultimately weaken religion, family and society.

We have been indoctrinated through the years by many means that gays and gay activities are no different than anything else in society. Hollywood has, for over 40 years, promoted homosexual characters and dialog in increasing frequency.

OK, gay people are just like everyone else in most ways. I agree absolutely. But when the institution of marriage of one man and one woman, blessed by God and proven through centuries, is about to be corrupted, I must vote "yes" to ban a homosexual version.

Writer urges 'yes' on death penalty
Let's see if I have this straight. It is OK for us to go out and kill upwards of a half-million deer in a season, several geese, ducks, rabbits, squirrels and even mourning doves. Their only crime is being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

This is all done with the blessing of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. However, we (the State) cannot kill even one single human being, regardless of the crime committed.

Most species of animals, even insects, have a social order, some even better than our own. That social order is either adhered to by all, or the violator is probably either going to end up as dinner for another animal or road kill.

As far as the possibility of executing an innocent person, although it's not impossible, forensic science has certainly cut the chances of that considerably over the years. The time to be against the death penalty was 30 or even 20 years ago. We shouldn't have been in favor of it at that time. Innocent people could have been executed. We are now past that point in history.

Therefore, a "yes" vote on the death penalty referendum on Nov. 7 would be correct.

IF this was actually left on a copier in the state capitol, as it was reported to me, then one must ask why the State Senate Dems are using taxpayer equipment for what is clearly campaign related material. If true, that would be a campaign violation for which some have gone to jail.

Today marks a horrendous outrage committed by Democrats in opposition to the civil rights movement.

A century ago, despite the Democrats’ continued terrorizing Republican organizational activity in the South, many courageous Republicans were standing up to their oppressors. One of those great southern leaders was Booker T. Washington, the famed African-American educator and founder of Alabama’s Tuskegee Institute. But even a man as distinguished as this, and even in the 20th century, was opposed by a racist Democratic Party.

A month after taking office in 1901, on October 16 Republican President Theodore Roosevelt invited an African-American to dinner at the White House. Of his guest, the President said: "I do not know a white man of the South who is as good a man as Booker T. Washington today."
The fury with which many Democrats reacted to this one gesture of respect for an African-American astonished Roosevelt. The Democrats raised hell in the media. They said it was a scandal, and a travesty, and an atrocity. Several Democrat- controlled state legislatures passed resolutions censuring the President. Some of the Democrat protestors went so far as to demand that the President throw away whatever silverware and china Washington had used.

The purpose of the meeting had been to discuss reviving the Republican Party in the South, a goal which Roosevelt was forced to abandon. Not until the Reagan era did our Grand Old Party regain its political dominance of the region.

The Republican Party should stop throwing away political capital, because the more we Republicans know about the history of our Party, the more the Democrats will worry about the future of theirs.

Board Reduction myths cleared up

Dear Letter to the Editor,

I’d like to clear up some myths that have been put forward by those opposed to reduction.

The Committee to Protect Citizen Government PAC was formed to stop the referendum from passing. What are they trying to protect the government from? Citizens? Support for reducing the county board is widespread; 81 Fond du Lac County citizens circulated the petition to reduce the number of supervisors and 4,300 citizens signed the petition indicating they support reduction.

Its worth repeating, the national average county board or commission operates efficiently and effectively with five members, we have 36. Some complain that they would have to attend more committee meetings if the board was reduced, then reduce the number of committees. There currently are 39 committees, commissions and boards and we could reduce the number considerably. Some have citizen members; I’d like to see more volunteer citizens sit on our committees.

A lot of different people support reduction. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, current and prior county board members, the former county executive, city council members, homemakers, farmers, business people, and this list goes on. People from every corner of the county support reduction.

According to the Fond du Lac County Clerks office, the 2005 mileage and per diem payments to the county board totaled $90,268.85 or an average of $2,507 per member. Assuming we reduce the number of committees, then reducing by 18 members is a savings of $45,126 per year. Add reduced postage costs, reduced time by county staff trying to attend all the committee meetings, less printing costs, fewer committee meetings if the committee structure was reformed and reorganized, etc, and the savings would be higher. The savings could be high enough to hire another sheriffs deputy or other essential staff.

The workload of the average supervisor isn’t as strenuous as some might want you to think. I’m on two committees and attend the monthly board meeting and find my commitment to be four to seven hours a month. If the board was reduced, the time commitment could continue at this level if the committee structure is reformed and reorganized.

How many of you know who your supervisor is? Many people don’t. Supervisors are invisible to the average citizen and it can’t get any worse than it is now. If there were fewer of them, more people might actually know who their supervisor is. If more people knew their supervisor; the supervisor would be more accountable to the people.

Its Halloween time and those opposed to reduction are trying to scare the rural people by telling them they will lose representation. Hogwash. It’s illegal for one thing. Federal and State Law require each district to have fair and equal population sizes. The City of Fond du Lac currently is represented by 16 supervisors and the rural areas of the county have 20. Under the reduction plan the City of Fond du Lac would have 8 supervisors and the rural areas would have 10. This is the same ratio we have now. No one loses representation!

If we don’t reduce now, when will it happen? The county board can reduce itself after each census and they didn’t do it in 1980, 1990, or 2000. Now they want you to think they’ll do it in 2010. Many of us don’t think they will and that is why we find this non-partisan referendum on the November ballot, short and simple. If we all said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” we’d still be watching black and white TV and driving a Ford Model T.

VOTER FRAUD UPDATE Vote Fraud in St. Louis....St. Louis Election Board officials say they've discovered at least 1,492 "potentially fraudulent" voter registration cards - including three from dead people and one from a 16-year-old - among the thousands pouring in before today's voter registration deadline for the Nov. 7 election.

City Republican elections director Scott Leiendecker said the board's staff expects to find even more bogus voter-registration applications among the thousands remaining to be processed.

The board plans to turn all the questionable cards over to city Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce for investigation and possible prosecution, said board chairman Kimberley Mathis.

The board says all the questionable cards were turned in by one group - the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, commonly known as ACORN.

This is in regards to the outlandish editorial by James D. Kiser, the vice chair of the Fond du Lac County Republican Party. What was outlandish? The fact that I called the Democrats on double voting? This is recorded fact. Donavan Riley is the Democrat Senate candidate from Milwaukee who is now being prosecuted for voting at least twice in the 2000 election. His defense: "I might have made a mistake."

This sounds like a party that has nothing to offer but trying to paint the other guy as the bad person. I do not agree with everything that the Democratic Party does, (like double voting, burning nazi symbols in lawns, or slashing tires?) but the thing that I like about it is that there is always a debate about what is right. Notice no debate on their party candidate's double vote. I ask where is the debate?

In Mr. Kiser's article, they are right and everyone else is wrong (he means it was not wrong for Democrats to do the above). I think he forgot who is in the majority in Congress and who holds the White House (what does this have to do with anything?).

Mark Green offers nothing new to the people of Wisconsin, other than he is a Republican clone (he means Cong. Green is honest).

The Republican party is about instilling fear in voters, and sadly it has worked the past two elections. Does he mean like the Republicans fear of having their tires slashed or having nazi symbols burned into their lawns or having a bunch of Democrats invade their headquarters screaming and yelling as they did in 2004? "Fear did not work in 2004 and we won the election!"

Change is always needed, but we are better off with Jim Doyle as governor. Seems Fond du Lac County Democrat Party leader Todd Schmitz is not so sure. Remember Schmitz is "having a hard time warming up to Mr. Dyole" and is only going to vote for him because he is a Democrat. What convictions!

Doyle is their top of their ticket in Wisconsin. It was Jim Doyle's lawyer who gave the State Elections Board their marching orders to rig this election and offered cover if they were caught. Wisconsin needs an honest Governor who will respect Wisconsin laws and the people he serves. Vote Mark Green for Governor.

Pro-life rally does not dishonor park

I attended and spoke at the pro-life rally that outraged Jan Starks.
I admire the military as much as anyone, and thank you for your service. So it's a shame that, amidst all the self-righteous hysteria, you couldn't articulate why a peaceful rally held in a public park "stamped on" or "disgraced" the memory of servicemen.

One Navy veteran attended, as did the mother of an Iraq vet — neither of whom were offended — and I suspect we had at least a couple more present.

On July 16, 2004, Gov. Doyle announced two Commerce Department projects from Veterans Park. Did the non-military purpose of this event, or the fact that Doyle did not serve in the military "seek to dishonor the memory of the fallen for a political advantage?" I want Mark Green to beat Doyle, but I see nothing wrong with the governor's choice of venue.

Since I read your letter, I've been trying to think of an instance when I've objected to where a liberal event was held. The answer: never.

Maybe conservatives just aren't as naturally inclined toward censorship as liberals.

Perhaps, contrary to your claim, abortion really is the issue. I have never seen an issue that stirs people's passion (for good or ill) like abortion. Humanitarian concerns lead pro-lifers to passionate, mature actions such as Monday's rally. On the other side, guilt can manifest itself in a variety of ways—and with the blood of 47 million defenseless children over three decades, the side of "choice" has plenty of guilt to go around.

Letter got it wrong about Van Hollen ad
J.B. Van Hollen has proven experience as a district attorney and a U.S. attorney. He would bring this experience to the office of attorney general. And yes, he will prosecute crime.

A recent letter stated that Van Hollen would not prosecute criminal cases if he were elected. The writer misrepresents the ad for Van Hollen. The ad states that Van Hollen will not make environmental cases the focus of his office when elected to the attorney general's office.

A review of the press releases for October from the Wisconsin Department of Justice shows five releases all dealing with environmental issues. No mention of prosecutions of drug dealers, sex offenders or other criminal activity.

Ask your neighbors what the greatest criminal threat is in their lives and I am certain they won't respond that it is the cranberry farms they fear the most.

This state needs J.B. Van Hollen as attorney general to put the Department of Justice back on track.

Campaign ads on TV miss the point
In case no one has noticed, this is an election year. No, the president is not running for anything, but you wouldn't know that by some of the ads I've seen on TV.

Why do the Democrats think that no matter what the office their candidate is running for, they are running against the president? The governor of this state should be concerned with what's going on in this state, not what has been happening in Washington, D.C.

Wisconsin has some of the highest taxes in the country -- gas, property, etc. Businesses aren't coming here, thanks to the hostile environment created by the DNR, Attorney General Lautenschlager and our governor.

How many opportunities for jobs in this state have been lost thanks to the policies of our liberal governor and his minions? A perfect example of this would be the recent case of Menards relocating 600 to 800 jobs to Iowa.

Many of the television ads being run by the Democrats and Governor Doyle state that Mark Green voted with the president a large percentage of the time. That's really interesting, since the president doesn't create bills; Congress does. The president just signs or vetoes them.

Isn't it a shame that no one producing those ads seems to have ever read the Constitution?

Cash Today Gone Tomorrow
In today’s Fond du Lac Reporter Governor Jim Doyle announced the Village of Lomira will receive a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant-Public Facilities for Economic Development grant to support expansion efforts of the Kondex Corporation. This expansion is expected to create 40 new jobs over the next three years.

While I welcome the new business to the area I could not help but do a little math. Forty jobs at $7,500.00 per job over three years.

Jim Doyle says he has created 170,000 new jobs in Wisconsin over the past three plus years. So did we spend 170,000 times $7,500 for a total of $1,275,000,000.00 for these 170,000 jobs. Just thinking.

What the Governor doesn’t say is how many people and jobs left Wisconsin because of the high taxes and bad business climate he has helped to create.

New Badger Poll Shows Lautenschlager with Significant Lead Among Democrats and Independents

Lautenschlager leads Primary opponent by 14 percent among Democrats in New Poll Madison, WI In a Badger Poll conducted by the University of Wisconsin Research Center, which was released today, Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager holds a commanding lead over her primary opponent, Kathleen Falk, among Democrats and Independents.

Those groups make up the most likely voters in a Democratic Primary. Among Democrats, Lautenschlager leads Falk by nearly 14 percent, 37.1% to 23.2% and also leads among Independents.

In the WPR-St. Norbert's Survey taken in April, the last public poll to survey the Attorney General primaries in Wisconsin, Lautenschlager held a ten percent lead over Falk among Democrats.

"The Badger Poll confirms what we already know, the Lautenschlager campaign is continuing on the right track and increasing our margin among the most likely Democratic Primary voters,"

Instructor who doubts 9/11 compares Bush to Hitler

MILWAUKEE — A University of Wisconsin-Madison instructor who has come under scrutiny for saying that the U.S. government orchestrated the Sept. 11 attacks compares President Bush to Adolf Hitler in an essay that his students are being required to buy.

The essay, "Interpreting the Unspeakable: The Myth of 9/11," is part of a $20 book of essays from 15 authors called "9/11 and American Empire: Muslims, Jews, and Christians Speak Out," according to an unedited copy first obtained by WKOW-TV in Madison and later by the Associated Press.

The book is on the syllabus for the twice-a-week course, "Islam: Religion and Culture," being taught by part-time instructor Kevin Barrett, but only three of the essays are required reading, not including Barrett's essay.

Barrett is active in a group called Scholars for 9/11 Truth, whose members say U.S. officials, not al-Qaida terrorists, were behind the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

"Like Bush and the neocons, Hitler and the Nazis inaugurated their new era by destroying an architectural monument and blaming its destruction on their designated enemies," he wrote.

Barrett said Tuesday he was comparing the attacks to the burning of the German parliament building, the Reichstag, in 1933, a key event in the establishment of the Nazi dictatorship.

"That's not comparing them as people, that's comparing the Reichstag fire to the demolition of the World Trade Center, and that's an accurate comparison that I would stand by," he said.

But he did say in an interview: "Hitler had a good 20 to 30 IQ points on Bush so comparing Bush to Hitler would in many ways be an insult to Hitler."
Moira Megargee, publicity director for the Northampton, Mass., publisher Interlink, said the book is due out at the end of November, and the editing isn't finished.
"It is not final, and for all we know, that essay may not be in the book or may be edited," she said.

The UW's decision to allow Barrett to teach the course touched off a firestorm of controversy over the summer once his views became widely known.
Sixty-one state legislators denounced the move, and one county board cut its funding for the UW-Extension by $8,247 — the amount Barrett will earn for teaching the course — in a symbolic protest, even though the course has nothing to do with that branch of the UW System.

The two major-party gubernatorial candidates said Tuesday they still believe he should have been fired.

"The governor feels this is crazy, offensive and shouldn't be in the classroom," said Matt Canter, spokesman for Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle.

In a statement, Republican Mark Green said: "Kevin Barrett continues to make a complete mockery of the University of Wisconsin and our great state."

One essay Barrett is requiring is entitled: "A Clash Between Justice and Greed," about how conflicts between Islam and the western world were made up after the "collapse of the Soviet Union to justify U.S. 'defense' spending, and to provide a pretext of controlling the world's resources."

"The Remaking of Islam in the Post 911 Era" is about the assault of Islamic people by the Rand Corporation.

The author of "Interpreting Terrorism: Muslim Problem or Covert Operations Nightmare?" contends some Western intelligence agencies are doing acts of terrorism to make it look like radical Islamics.

UW-Madison Provost Patrick Farrell decided to retain Barrett for the course after reviewing his plans and qualifications. He said Barrett could present his ideas during one week of the course as long as students were allowed to challenge them.

He later warned Barrett to stop seeking publicity for his personal political views.
Farrell said Tuesday that he hasn't seen the essay but faculty can assign readings that may not be popular to everyone.

"I think part of the role of any challenging course here is going to encourage students to think of things from a variety of perspectives," he said.
Farrell said it's common for instructors or professors to require books they have written or contributed to.

"For many faculty a book represents their best thinking on how an issue should be presented, so why not use that 'best thinking' for the students they teach?" he said in an e-mail.

In the essay, Barrett restates many of his controversial views of the terrorist attacks.
Barrett said required class reading will also represent mainstream views on the Sept. 11 attacks.

'Double voters' Don't let 'double voters' steal yours

It is time for all the good and decent people of Wisconsin to stand up on Nov. 7 and say, "I will not have my vote stolen again by the likes of Donavan Riley."

Donavan Riley is the Democrat Senate candidate from Milwaukee who is now being prosecuted for voting at least twice in the 2000 election. His defense: "I might have made a mistake." As a result, my vote did not count in 2000.

In the 2000 elections, a woman worth over $700 million dollars came to Milwaukee to buy votes with cigarettes; in 2004, supporters in Madison used weed killer to carve out a Nazi symbol on a Bush supporter's lawn; in 2004 on Election Day they slashed the tires of vans meant to be used by Republicans to get out the vote.

And of course, when they get caught they say it's the Republicans that are suppressing the vote. Let's not forget it's the Democrats that fight tooth and nail to stop any voter ID law.

I take this very personally because my one vote is taken away by double voters.

Now Gov. Jim Doyle is rigging elections with the help of Democrats on the State Election Board — the Doyle campaign lawyer who gave the board their marching orders and the Doyle-appointed judge who furthers this insult on the Wisconsin voters.

Democrats stand for gay marriage, adoption by gays, state funded abortions, partial birth abortions, life not death for the most vicious killers on earth but death for pre-born babies, tax increases, lawsuits on honest businessmen and farmers, a cut and run policy on the war on terror, and the list goes on.

Now, please make a difference and get out to work for Mark Green in any way you can.

Guest editorial: GOP 'sets record straight' on County Board debate

Ask anyone I know. I don't advocate mud-slinging, name-calling, or leveling accusations.

The political ads on TV drive me just as crazy as they do everyone else. I like to examine both sides of an issue before making an informed decision.

For these reasons, I am distressed by the unfounded barrage of attacks on "my" Fond du Lac County Republican Party. Somehow, we have found ourselves in the middle of the debate that is raging around the County Board referendum.

We have heard the accusations, and felt they were so absurd that we largely ignored them — until Thursday. That morning, The Reporter felt the need to state as fact, on the front page of its paper: "the Fond du Lac County Republican Party helped circulate petitions for the Nov. 7 referendum … "

In "researching" this story, The Reporter did not even bother to call any of our party leadership or stop by our office to see if this was really the case. Instead, The Reporter took the word of two people that never spoke to any of the leadership in our party, either.

Let's set the record straight: In late spring, Supervisor Sam Meyer e-mailed to ask if he could give a legislative report and also discuss the County Board reduction debate. Since we have an open invitation to all legislators to speak at our membership meetings, I welcomed him to speak. However, I cautioned that not all of our members are in favor of reduction and that we, as a party, had decided not to endorse one way or the other.

He came to the meeting, spoke for a few minutes, and a member of our group suggested that anyone wanting to help with the petition drive take a few petitions home to work on. Less than 10 people out of our total membership of 200-plus took petitions to circulate. This hardly constitutes a "Republican machine" or "Republican party sophistry."

What we have been doing as a party is focusing our efforts on electing a new governor and attorney general for Wisconsin. Every ounce of our enthusiasm, energy, and even our pocket change has been saved just for this purpose. We feel so strongly that our candidates for statewide office are what Wisconsin needs, we have very little time to spend on anything else.

Mark Green, candidate for governor, will lower our tax burden, reform the UW system, fund adult stem cell research, sign voter I.D. legislation, prevent big government from driving up health-care costs and return dignity to the governor's office.

J.B. Van Hollen, candidate for attorney general, will actively fight the "meth" problem, prosecute those involved in voter fraud, protect our children from pedophiles and cyber-criminals, work with local law enforcement agencies, and support the efforts of small businesses and farmers.

Even the leader of the local Democrat party shares our sentiments in regard to the gubernatorial race. He stated in his commentary in last Tuesday's Reporter: "I'm finding it tough to warm up to Mr. Doyle." He also acknowledged that he supports Doyle because he is the Democrat chairperson "and therefore must support Democratic candidates."

American elections are all about the voter, not the political parties. Each individual voter has a responsibility to find out the facts surrounding the issues on the ballot and measure them against his or her own values.

Please use these last 30 days to look beyond "the facts" in the paper, and gear up to vote on Nov. 7.

This is a letter I fired off to County Board Chairman Martin Farrell today. The debate was the possible reduction of the County Board from 36 to 18. Schmitz is in favor of keeping the board at 36 members. I'm glad he is on their side!

As County Board Chairman, I feel you need to be advised of the conduct of County Board Supervisor Schmitz at the debate last night. I was sitting near Supervisor Schmitz and could not believe the way he was acting. He was sitting directly in front of County Executive Allen Buechel, so you might want to speak to Allen about his conduct.

I came very close to stepping out of my seat and asking him to quit acting like a 10 year old. Someone should tell him to grow up and show a little class. This is not grade school, this is the people's work.

If this is what passes as good behavior in these chambers by a County Board Supervisor during a debate, heaven help us. Supervisor Schmitz does not represent the county board in a dignified manner.

I saw this same type of activity by the supporters of Rolling Meadows while County Executive Buechel was speaking and I was floored at the disrespect he was shown by the members of the audience.

payments, the Treasury said Monday.

The Hispanic heritage of the Republican Party

As the country celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, our Grand Old Party would benefit from appreciating its own Hispanic heritage. How many Republicans know, for instance, that the first Hispanic U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and Governor were all Republicans?

In 2003, the Democrat candidate for Governor of California, Cruz Bustamante, said he wanted to be the state's first Hispanic Governor. He and most Democrats -- as well as too many Republicans -- did not know that a Hispanic had already served as Governor of California and that he was a Republican.

Born in Santa Barbara, Romualdo Pacheco was a judge, state legislator, state treasurer, and Brigadier- General in the Union Army before being elected Lt. Governor. When in 1875 the Governor was elected to the U.S. Senate, Pacheco became Governor and served ten months. The next year, Pacheco also became the first Hispanic elected to the U.S. House of Republicans, where he served three terms. He was then President Benjamin Harrison's ambassador to several Central American nations.

Another great Republican, New Mexico’s Octaviano Larrazolo, was the first Hispanic in the U.S. Senate. Originally a Democrat, Larrazolo switched to the Republican Party in protest against the anti-Hispanic policies of the Democrats. He was then elected, as a Republican, Governor in 1918 and then U.S. Senator in 1928.

The Republican Party should stop throwing away political capital, because the more we Republicans know about the history of our Party, the more the Democrats will worry about the future of theirs.

Opponents of the proposed state marriage amendment are telling you things that just aren't true.

"It'll undo domestic violence protections." Nope. Wisconsin domestic violence laws don't factor sexual orientation. In fact, 2001 Wis. Act 109 expanded our statute to "romantic or intimate social relationship(s) between (two) adult individuals" — no word on orientation.

"Gays will lose visitation rights, power of attorney, etc." Actually, anybody can make these arrangements with anyone, regardless of the relationship. How do eccentric widows leave property to their cats?

They write a will. To liberals who scoff at this, why, then, was the importance of everybody getting their legal affairs in order the only lesson you learned and promoted after Terri Schiavo's murder?

"Gay couples won't be able to get health benefits." Hogwash. Public and private employers would still have the right to say "we'll give you Benefit A for whoever you live with," without inventing "a legal status identical or substantially similar to marriage," which is all the amendment invalidates.

The law wouldn't recognize homosexual unions, but neither would it discriminate. Gays and straights equally have the right to enter into marriage by marrying someone of the opposite sex. Debate the question, but don't pretend you're stuck in the back of the bus.

Rather than religious fanatics, marriage's defenders are students of history and society. They know that only the union of man and woman continues the human race and that children need parents of both sexes.

Who's the real fanatic: he who recognizes this correlation between Bible and biology, or he who insists it's mere coincidence?

True marriage is simply recognition of this reality, and defense of true marriage is defense of civilization's very foundation.

Anti-Bush T-Shirt OK In School, Court Rules

Montpelier, VT (AHN) - A three-judge panel at the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday overturned a federal court ruling that said the Williamstown middle school had authority to ban pictures of drugs and alcohol on the shirt that was critical of President Bush. Principal Kathleen Morris-Kortz had said the T-shirt with anti-Bush messages worn by Zachary Guiles also had images of cocaine and a martini glass which violated the state's dress code policy, which prohibits clothing that promotes the use of drugs or alcohol.

In a 3-0 ruling, however, the court said the censorship of images by the school had violated Guiles' right of freedom to speech.

"The pictures are an important part of the political message that Guiles wished to convey, accentuating the anti-drug (and anti-Bush) message," the court wrote.
The shirt called the president a lying drunk driver who abused cocaine and marijuana, and labeled Bush the "chicken-hawk-in-chief" who was engaged in a "world domination tour."

Guiles, a seventh grader, was suspended for one day in May 2004 when he refused to cover up the pictures of drugs and alcohol after a student and parent had complained about the shirt. He had been wearing the shirt once a week for two months. A day after his suspension, Guiles wore the shirt with duct tape over the images.

Guiles, now 15, said he was pleased with the outcome. "I think this is a very good sign that even with the current administration and the way the country is going there can still be a justice that allows free speech," he said.

Editorial: The board was wrong From the Journal Sentinel

Here's the part of the chronology voters need to understand when they consider whether Rep. Mark Green did anything wrong when he transferred money from his congressional campaign to his gubernatorial race.

He transferred the money a day before the state Elections Board put limits on money from such transfers. It had previously allowed such a transfer, however, for Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett when he was running for governor in 2001. The rule permitting that was the one Green had every reason to expect was still in force.

Jim Doyle's campaign protested the Elections Board action in Barrett's case. It didn't get the ruling it wanted then but did now. Doyle can thank rank partisanship.

Understand, the Elections Board was quite correct in banning the transfer of funds from congressional campaign funds to state campaigns, a rule already in effect for state campaign money going to federal campaigns. If people are going to run in Wisconsin, they should abide by the rules in effect for Wisconsin candidates, including the limits on political action committee money.

Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, in protesting the Green transfer, was correct to highlight what such transfer of funds meant to state limits on political action committee money in state campaigns.

Some argue that the rule allowing transfers from federal to state campaigns always contained the caveat that they must abide by Wisconsin law, on PAC limits for instance. All right, but there should be no double standard on enforcement - good for Barrett and hurting Doyle when that suits a board in 2001 but not good for Green and aiding Doyle when Democrats have more votes on the board.

This is yet another reason the Legislature should revisit Senate Bill 1, which passed overwhelming in the Senate but which Assembly leadership didn't allow to have a floor vote. This bill would have merged the state Elections and Ethics boards into a stronger Government Accountability Board.

In the Green case, four Democrats on the board were joined by the Libertarian to compel Green to return $467,844 from political action committees not registered in Wisconsin. Two Republicans on the nine-member board voted against it, with one Republican not voting because of a conflict of interest. The board member appointed by the state chief justice was absent.

The current board's members are selected by elected officials and the heads of the Democratic, Republican and Libertarian parties. It's a system tailor-made for partisanship.

SB 1, as passed by the Senate, would have severely limited the potential for such partisanship. This new board would have four members, appointed by the governor but nominated by a committee comprised of Wisconsin's chief justice and the deans of the Marquette University and University of Wisconsin law schools. These nominees couldn't be lobbyists or members of a political party, political committee or have been a political candidate for one year before the appointment.
The Elections Board's decision was wrong. But it is one thing to bemoan this ruling and quite another to ignore it.

The board says Green must give back $467,844 of the $1.3 million he transferred. The Green campaign said initially that it has spent the money. It is launching a fund-raising effort to raise nearly the lost amount in 72 hours, even as a campaign lawyer says Green will fight in court to undo the ruling.

A court challenge is Green's right, and his fund-raising blitz indicates he recognizes an opportunity to tap anger over this ruling or that he intends to repay the money. There's nothing wrong with either. But ignoring the board's decision can't be an option.

It is always this simple, Doyle is wrong and Green is right!

“Today's decision is emblematic of the corruption that has invaded state government under Jim Doyle. Under Jim Doyle government decisions are made to benefit his campaign interests - while the taxpayers get the short end of the stick.

“Jim Doyle's allies on the State Election Board defied their own attorney's legal advice, state law and basic principles of fairness in their effort to help the struggling campaign of Governor Doyle. A week earlier, Scott Smiley had been a lieutenant in charge of a Stryker Brigade Combat Team platoon in Mosul, Iraq. He'd graduated from West Point, made it through Ranger school and hoped to serve in special operations.

Yet in April 2005, he was barely conscious - the victim of a suicide car bombing that sent shrapnel into his brain, leaving him temporarily paralyzed and permanently blind.
Within days of Smiley's arrival at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, a civilian social worker encouraged his wife to fill out forms to medically retire him.
"Instantly, this thing inside me was like 'No, this isn't right,'" Tiffany Smiley, now 25, recalled. "It was just this gut feeling."

Through weeks and months to come, as Scott Smiley's body healed, as he learned how to walk with a cane and read Braille, he and his wife were told by doctors and therapists in Washington; Tacoma, Wash., and Palo Alto, Calif.: Your Army career is over.
Smiley - earnest, outgoing, quick to poke fun at himself, devoutly religious - has proved them wrong.

Taking advantage of the Army's new willingness to consider allowing seriously injured soldiers to stay in uniform, and with the backing of superiors all the way up to a three-star general, Smiley has settled into a job at Fort Monroe's Training and Doctrine Command.
He has matter-of-factly accepted his fate.

"Being blind is no different than being sighted," he said. "You just live life a little differently."

CNN the fair and balanced news

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - CNN apologized Tuesday after an open mike transmitted an anchor's bathroom conversation with another woman live over the network as it was carrying President Bush's speech in New Orleans.

"Live From" anchor Kyra Phillips had apparently left the set around 12:48 p.m. EDT Tuesday for a bathroom break while the news channel carried Bush's speech marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Phillips' wireless microphone was turned on and picked up about a minute and a half of a muffled conversation she had with an unidentified woman where she apparently talked about her husband, laughed and talked about her brother.

"I've got to be protective of him," she said without being aware that the mic was on. "He's married, three kids, and his wife is just a control freak." CNN anchor Daryn Kagan broke into the telecast immediately afterward updating viewers on what Bush had been saying.

"CNN experienced audio difficulties during the president's speech today in New Orleans," the CNN statement read. "We apologize to our viewers and the president for the disruption."
CNN apologized to the White House on Tuesday afternoon. It wasn't clear whether it was a technical or human malfunction, and CNN, citing corporate policy, said it wouldn't comment on whether anyone would be disciplined. It seemed unlikely that anyone would.

CNN hasn't been immune to technical problems, particularly during political events. In November, a gaffe during a live speech by Vice President Dick Cheney showed an intermittent "X" on the screen. CNN apologized and fired a telephone operator who told a caller who complained that the network was exercising "free speech."

And in July 2004, viewers heard Democratic National Convention producer Don Mischer swear over an open microphone when balloons didn't immediately drop after a speech by Sen. John Kerry, the party's presidential nominee.

But some in the TV business said Tuesday that CNN should have had a system of checks and balances in place to make sure anchor's mikes are off when they're not on the air.
"It's a cardinal rule," one executive said.

This year's Democratic plan for the future is another inane sound bite designed to trick American voters into trusting them with national security.

To wit, they're claiming there is no connection between the war on terror and the war in Iraq, and while they're all for the war against terror — absolutely in favor of that war — they are adamantly opposed to the Iraq war.

You know, the war where the U.S. military is killing thousands upon thousands of terrorists (described in the media as "Iraqi civilians," even if they are from Jordan, like the now-dead leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi).

That war. As Howard Dean put it this week, "The occupation in Iraq is costing American lives and hampering our ability to fight the real global war on terror." This would be like complaining that Roosevelt's war in Germany was hampering our ability to fight the real global war on fascism. Or anti-discrimination laws were hampering our ability to fight the real war on racism. Or dusting is hampering our ability to fight the real war on dust. Maybe Dean is referring to a different globe, like Mars or Saturn, or one of those new planets they haven't named yet.

Assuming against all logic and reason that the Democrats have some serious objection to the war in Iraq, perhaps they could tell us which part of the war on terrorism they do support.

That would be easier than rattling off the long list of counterterrorism measures they vehemently oppose.

They oppose the National Security Agency listening to people who are calling specific phone numbers found on al-Qaida cell phones and computers. Spying on al-Qaida terrorists is hampering our ability to fight the global war on terror!

Enraged that the Bush administration deferred to the safety of the American people rather than the obstructionist Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court, one Clinton-appointed judge, James Robertson, resigned from the FISA court in protest over the NSA spying program.

Democratic Sen. Russell Feingold called for a formal Senate censure of President Bush when he found out the president was rude enough to be listening in on al-Qaida phone calls. (Wait until Feingold finds out the White House has been visiting Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's "MySpace" page!)

Last week a federal judge appointed by Jimmy Carter ruled the NSA program to surveil phone calls to al-Qaida members in other counties unconstitutional.

Democrats oppose the detainment of Taliban and al-Qaida soldiers at our military base in Guantanamo, Cuba.

Democrats such as Rep. Jane Harman, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, have called for Guantanamo to be shut down. The Guantanamo detainees are not innocent insurance salesmen imprisoned in some horrible mix-up like something out of a Perry Mason movie.

The detainees were captured on the battlefield in Afghanistan. You remember — the war liberals pretended to support right up until approximately one nanosecond after John Kerry conceded the 2004 election to President Bush.

But apparently, imprisoning al-Qaida warriors we catch on the battlefield is hampering our ability to fight the global war on terror.

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin has compared Guantanamo to Nazi concentration camps and Soviet gulags, based on a report that some detainees were held in temperatures so cold that they shivered and others were forced to listen to loud rap music — more or less approximating the conditions in the green room at "The Tyra Banks Show." Also, one of the detainees was given a badminton racket that was warped. New York Times columnist Bob Herbert complained this week that detainees in Guantanamo have "no hope of being allowed to prove their innocence." (I guess that's excluding the hundreds who have been given administrative hearings or released already.)

Of course all the usual "human rights" groups are carping about how brutally our servicemen in Guantanamo are treating the little darlings who are throwing feces at them.

Democrats oppose the Patriot Act, the most important piece of legislation passed since 9/11, designed to make the United States less of a theme park for would-be terrorists. The vast majority of Senate Democrats (43-2) voted against renewing the Patriot Act last December, whereupon their minority leader, Sen. Harry Reid, boasted: "We killed the Patriot Act" — a rather unusual sentiment for a party so testy about killing terrorists.

In 2004, Sen. John Kerry — the man they wanted to be president — called the Patriot Act "an assault on our basic rights." At least all "basic rights" other than the one about not dying a horrible death at the hand of Islamic fascists. Yes, it was as if Congress had deliberately flown two commercial airliners into the twin towers of our Constitution.

They oppose profiling Muslims at airports. They oppose every bust of a terrorist cell, sneering that the cells in Lackawanna, New York City, Miami, Chicago and London weren't a real threat like, say, a nondenominational prayer before a high school football game. Now that's a threat.

The Arab/Muslim Nazi Connection

Arab leaders and media outlets have long been addicted to comparing Israel to the Nazi regime, while at the same time demeaning the extent of the Holocaust. This obsession with defaming and antagonizing the Jewish people and state was on full display in recent months and reached a crescendo – or rather nadir – the day before Pope John Paul II visited the Temple Mount during his Holy Land pilgrimage. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, just hours before hosting the Pope, gave a series of press interviews, first telling the AP: "The figure of 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust is exaggerated and is used by the Israelis to gain international support… It's not my problem. Muslims didn't do anything on this issue. It's the doing of Hitler who hated the Jews," asserted the acid-tongued Mufti – a figure appointed by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. "Six million? It was a lot less," Sabri repeated for an Italian newspaper. "It's not my fault if Hitler hated the Jews. Anyway, they hate them just about everywhere." The Mufti finished the day with Reuters, charging, "We denounce all massacres, but I don't see why a certain massacre should be used for political gain and blackmail." However, as a matter of record, there was a well-documented, thriving relationship between the Arab/Muslim world and Nazi Germany, with perhaps the most significant figure linking Hitler to the Middle East being none other Sabri's very own predecessor, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin el-Husseini. Here is a brief review of that dark, overlooked chapter in history.

The Führer's Mufti: After World War I, the Great Powers of Europe jockeyed for influence in the Middle East's oil fields and trade routes, with France and Britain holding mandates throughout most of the region. In the 1930s, the fascist regimes that arose in Italy and Germany sought greater stakes in the area, and began courting Arab leaders to revolt against their British and French custodians. Among their many willing accomplices was Jerusalem Mufti Haj Amin el-Husseini, who fled Palestine after agitating against the British during the Arab Revolt of 1936-39. He found refuge in Iraq – another of Her Majesty's mandates – where he again topped the British most wanted list after helping pull the strings behind the Iraqi coup of 1941. The revolt in Baghdad was orchestrated by Hitler as part of a strategy to squeeze the region between the pincers of Rommel's troops in North Africa, German forces in the Caucuses and pro-Nazi forces in Iraq. However, in June 1941 British troops put down the rebellion and the Mufti escaped via Tehran to Italy and eventually to Berlin.

Once in Berlin, the Mufti received an enthusiastic reception by the "Islamische Zentralinstitut" and the whole Islamic community of Germany, which welcomed him as the "Führer of the Arabic world." In an introductory speech, he called the Jews the "most fierce enemies of the Muslims" and an "ever corruptive element" in the world. Husseini soon became an honored guest of the Nazi leadership and met on several occasions with Hitler. He personally lobbied the Führer against the plan to let Jews leave Hungary, fearing they would immigrate to Palestine. He also strongly intervened when Adolf Eichman tried to cut a deal with the British government to exchange German POWs for 5000 Jewish children who also could have fled to Palestine. The Mufti's protests with the SS were successful, as the children were sent to death camps in Poland instead. One German officer noted in his journals that the Mufti would liked to have seen the Jews "preferably all killed." On a visit to Auschwitz, he reportedly admonished the guards running the gas chambers to work more diligently. Throughout the war, he appeared regularly on German radio broadcasts to the Middle East, preaching his pro-Nazi, anti-Semitic message to the Arab masses back home.

To show gratitude towards his hosts, in 1943 the Mufti travelled several times to Bosnia, where on orders of the SS he recruited the notorious "Hanjar troopers," a special Bosnian Waffen SS company which slaugh-tered 90% of Bosnia's Jews and burned countless Serbian churches and villages. These Bosnian Muslim recruits rapidly found favor with SS chief Heinrich Himmler, who established a special Mullah Military school in Dresden.

The only condition the Mufti set for his help was that after Hitler won the war, the entire Jewish population in Palestine should be liquidated. After the war, Husseini fled to Switzerland and from there escaped via France to Cairo, were he was warmly received. The Mufti used funds received earlier from the Hilter regime to finance the Nazi-inspired Arab Liberation Army that terrorized Jews in Palestine.

The Arab Embrace of Nazism: Husseini represents the prevalent pro-Nazi posture among the Arab/Muslim world before, during and even after the Holocaust. The Nazi-Arab connection existed even when Adolf Hitler first seized power in Germany in 1933. News of the Nazi takeover was welcomed by the Arab masses with great enthusiasm, as the first congratulatory telegrams Hitler received upon being appointed Chancellor came from the German Consul in Jerusalem, followed by those from several Arab capitals. Soon afterwards, parties that imitated the National Socialists were founded in many Arab lands, like the "Hisb-el-qaumi-el-suri" (PPS) or Social Nationalist Party in Syria. Its leader, Anton Sa'ada, styled himself the Führer of the Syrian nation, and Hitler became known as "Abu Ali" (In Egypt his name was "Muhammed Haidar"). The banner of the PPS displayed the swastika on a black-white background. Later, a Lebanese branch of the PPS – which still receives its orders from Damascus – was involved in the assassination of Lebanese President Pierre Gemayel.

The most influential party that emulated the Nazis was "Young Egypt," which was founded in October 1933. They had storm troopers, torch processions, and literal translations of Nazi slogans – like "One folk, One party, One leader." Nazi anti-Semitism was replicated, with calls to boycott Jewish businesses and physical attacks on Jews. Britain had a bitter experience with this pro-German mood in Egypt, when the official Egyptian government failed to declare war on the Wehrmacht as German troops were about to conquer Alexandria.

After the war, a member of Young Egypt named Gamal Abdul Nasser was among the officers who led the July 1952 revolution in Egypt. Their first act – following in Hitler's footsteps – was to outlaw all other parties. Nasser's Egypt became a safe haven for Nazi war criminals, among them the SS General in charge of the murder of Ukrainian Jewry; he became Nasser's bodyguard and close comrade. Alois Brunner, another senior Nazi war criminal, found shelter in Damascus, where he served for many years as senior adviser to the Syrian general staff and still resides today.

Sami al-Joundi, one of the founders of the ruling Syrian Ba'ath Party, recalls: "We were racists. We admired the Nazis. We were immersed in reading Nazi literature and books... We were the first who thought of a translation of Mein Kampf. Anyone who lived in Damascus at that time was witness to the Arab inclination toward Nazism."

These leanings never completely ceased. Hitler's Mein Kampf currently ranks sixth on the best-seller list among Palestinian Arabs. Luis Al-Haj, translator of the Arabic edition, writes glowingly in the preface about how Hitler's "ideology" and his "theories of nationalism, dictatorship and race… are advancing especially within our Arabic States." When Palestinian police first greeted Arafat in the self-rule areas, they offered the infamous Nazi salute - the right arm raised straight and upward.

The PLO and notably Arafat himself do not make a secret of their source of
inspiration. The Grand Mufti el-Husseini is venerated as a hero by the PLO. It should be noted, that the PLO's top figure in east Jerusalem today, Faisal Husseini, is the grandson to the Führer's Mufti. Arafat also considers the Grand Mufti a respected educator and leader, and in 1985 declared it an honor to follow in his footsteps. Little wonder. In 1951, a close relative of the Mufti named Rahman Abdul Rauf el-Qudwa el-Husseini matriculated to the University of Cairo. The student decided to conceal his true identity and enlisted as "Yasser Arafat."

He turned this down at first but then says later, "I'm not interested -- at this point." He was an unindicted coconspirator! The only reason I bring this up is because anybody could have gone back and found this. Robert Novak did. Murtha is held up in the Drive-By Media as an angel. He's a god. He's a paragon of virtue. He's infallible! He says, "We should get out of Iraq. We're losing. We can't win!"Meanwhile, people like Hookstra and Santorum and others are considered kooks. "They still believe this weapons of mass destruction stuff!" So we're just trying to establish for you here that the Drive-By Media and the Democrats will overlook their own conspirators, their own unindicted coconspirators, overlook their own corruption in order to fulfill the notion of their own template. Here is the Abscam-related meeting involving John Murtha showing the rejection of the offered bribe was less than definite.

UNDERCOVER FBI AGENT: I went out and I got this the fifty thousand, okay? From what you're telling me, okay? You're telling me that that's not what you -- you know, that that's not -

-MURTHA: I'm not interested. I'm sorry.

UNDERCOVER FBI AGENT: Okay.

RUSH: "At this point.""I'm not interested -- at this point." So he was "unindicted," but nevertheless a "co-conspirator." That is Jack Murtha, who is being held up, as I say, as a paragon of virtue by the Drive-By Media.

He's starting to embarrass the Democratic Party as John Kerry has embarrassed the party.

Posted August 4, 2006 Letters: Stem cell debate (Fond du Lac Reporter)

Amid the coverage of the stem cell debate (The Reporter, July 30) was an striking sentence: "Only embryonic stem cells, which have the capacity to become any kind of human tissue, have the potential to repair vital organs."

A deeper look into research and applications underscores the fact that embryonic stem cell (ESC) research is a false hope propagated by questionable scientific, media and pro-abortion hype.

If, as the stories suggested, ESC shows more promise than adult stem cells (ASC), why are there currently dozens of clinical trials going on using adult stem cells, but not a single one using embryonic stem cells?

While ESC researchers are plagued by the continued formation of tumors in tissue treated with these cells, Dr. David Prentice of the Family Research Council has listed 72 diseases that are now being used to treated or cured through the use of ASC or umbilical cord blood.

In a much-ballyhooed letter appearing in Science Magazine just before President Bush vetoed an ESC bill, three leading ESC supporters challenged Prentice's findings. The authors stated ASC "treatments fully tested in all required phases of clinical trials and approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration are available to treat only nine of the conditions" on his list.

This is inaccurate. But left unchallenged, it is still nine more than ESC research can claim. In addition, there are 1,175 clinical trials for ASC research, compared to zero for ESC research.

Thomas Jefferson wrote: "To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical."

A fertilized human egg on its natural path will become a baby.

Destroying it in the name of possibly saving another life is wrong.

Asking taxpayers to pay for that death is abhorrent.

Board chair wrong to say it's 'sadistic'

In a radio interview July 26, County Board Chairman Martin Farrell opined that it was "fanatical" for a citizen's group "to force a referendum" on reducing the county board of supervisors from 36 to 18. He claimed that there was "something sadistic about this whole group." He also said, "They hate for some reason" and accused them of "personal and hidden agendas."

Farrell is a political science professor at Ripon College. Surely he must know that the right of the people to petition their government is guaranteed by the Constitution — a right recently affirmed by the Wisconsin Attorney General when the right of Fond du Lac County supervisors to circulate petitions was questioned.

The kindest definition of "sadist" is one who enjoys cruelty.

Wisconsin Act 100 which outlined the procedure to be used if citizens wished to reduce the size of their county boards was passed by both houses of the legislature on a voice vote and signed by the Governor this spring; it's a non-partisan issue. I am reasonably certain that they didn't think that they were aiding and abetting "cruelty" to county supervisors currently holding office. County supervisor is not a lifetime appointment.

Members of CPR are willing to discuss the merits of the issue after the Ad Hoc Committee's report is presented to the County Board -- anywhere, anytime we are invited, if our schedules permit, but only if the discussion is civil, and remains civil.

Right now, I wouldn't discuss the weather with Marty Farrell.

A gentleman and a scholar would apologize for his tirade. We won't hold our breath!

Can the modern press get any worse?

I am posting a link to EU Referendum. This links you to a story that makes a good case for the staging of dead children bodies for the press to make Israel look bad.

I have no doubt that this stuff happens to Israel as well as the US. This is as low as it gets!

Schmitz Tax Fails

Well folks the tax and spender Todd Schmitz and his Democrat friends have failed again to add a ½% sales tax to Fond du Lac County. Below is the story from The Reporter. Notice Schmitz proposed the tax then voted against it. Sound like some one else from the Democratic Party (John Kerry, “I voted for the 87 billion before I voted against it.”)

Here's some advice folks, "Never Allow Todd Schmitz TO Be Elected To Anything Again!"

These types will tax us to death and beyond if possible.

County Board turns down sales tax
The Reporter Staff

A half-percent countywide sales tax received little support Tuesday from the Fond du Lac County Board of Supervisors.

The proposed sales tax was voted down, 33-3, with County Board supervisors Jerry Keifenheim, Jenna Saul and Paul Levandowski voting for it.

County Board Supervisor Todd Schmitz, who proposed the sales tax, asked other County Board supervisors to vote against it. He said he wanted the County Board to discuss the issue but would vote against it himself.

Schmitz originally proposed the sales tax to help fund Rolling Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 1155 S. Military Road, but the County Board voted 27-9 earlier in the meeting to close the doors of Rolling Meadows and to create a new 24-bed nursing home facility inside a wing of the Health Care Center, 459 E. First St.

County Executive Allen Buechel said he would not veto a sales tax if the County Board passed it.

The half-percent sales tax, if approved, would have raised an estimated $6.1 million per year.
